I was trying to look at past threads about using large pistol primers instead of large rifle primers. I haven't been able to come up with much using the search feature. I wanted to do some load development with different primers. I have some Remington 2 1/2 LP and I know some of you use them according to equipment lists from matches. I would use them in Shiloh rifles with Shiloh blocks. What do you do different - if anything - to prevent the damage to the block that I have read about. Or are Shiloh blocks hardened enough to keep the damage from happening?

Option 2 is using a press mounted 2 piece die that re-swages the primer pocket pocket to a less depth and at the same time uniforms the flash hole. Then you go with a drop in coffee filter disc under powder.

Yesterday I shot some of my reloads of 3031 and a 405 grain lead bullet (45-70) utilizing Winchester LPP. I used no special technique to press/ seat the primers; they seated a “tad” shallower than LRP do. No misfires, no pierced primers, no blow-by, no primer setback, etc. - the rounds POI were exactly the same as with using LRP and they grouped exactly the same. My experience and observations were zero difference between the two primer results. However, these loadings were a substitute for not having a supply of LRP - I intend to return to reloading with LRP if they ever become available (again). The LPP seem to work well “in a pinch”.

Seriously, no bias, just curiosity. Why did you neglect to mention that you were using 3031 smokeless powder rather than black powder?

I was using 3031, I was not using black powder. I w-I-l-l s-p-e-a-k s-l-o-w-e-r n-e-x-t t-I-m-e.

Pistol primers are used with black powder to provide a softer ignition and more consistent downrange performance.

I guess using them with smokeless is because you don't have any large rifle primers or because "y o u d o n ' t r e a d t o o f a s t"

I know I'm easily confused where DD is concerned but he's over confused me now.

I'm pretty sure he uses black powder.
Steve Sudbeck on his initial post said he tried it with 3031.

So unless there was an earlier thread he's referring to, perhaps DD will put the cactus juice down and explain?
Perhaps SS changed his post before we read it.

As for the 3031 mention, was trying to gauge your reading comprehension skills and limited memory.

Since pointing out that deficit earlier we are all pleased at the improvements.
