This is where you can place your scores from the matches. It uses an excel spread sheet! If you send me your sheet of scores I can put it on the forum and provide a link where everyone can view it.

Mt 1000 2023

Post by bobw »

The Montana 1000 of 2023 is over won by by Randy Ellingrod of Clairmont wyo. With a 24/40 score. Loyce his wife was top lady shooter with 20/40. Tough conditions 89-90° @ 26% humidity with light but variable winds enough to throw you off shot to shot.
1878 a 145 years ago in the breaks of the Yellowstone River , the Coulees, draws and plains the 45 2 7/8" Sharps Rifle was the boss gun. So it seems it still is with a Shiloh 74 big bull barrel 45 -2 7/8" shooting black powder , bore diameter paper patched bullets loaded with GREASE WADS shot the high score tied at 24 with Elwynn Brunner but winner by tie breaker. Elwynn was high scope shooter. Buffalo gun shoot with real buffalo gun loads 1st place by a regular guy who just had major reconstructive surgery on his shooting shoulder. Congrats to both Randy and Loyce. It was great shooting in tough conditions..bobw

A truly fun day in sweltering heat. Bob failed to mention that those top shooters were pushed hard by those of lesser repute! And just getting to the firing line through the invasion of grasshoppers was success in itself, good thing they are not carnivorous!

Randy, you were shooting PP? When did you leave the dark side! That was a fun match and seems like standing in front of the target I'm shooting at is still the safest place at the range. See you at the next one.

Wow. Patched bullets and grease wads. That is really impressive. But it does keep the fouling soft in the heat.
Congrats Randy and Loyce for the womans win.
And to you Elwin for scope.

Powderburner precisely. I knew a grease cookie does a couple things: a gas seal, provides easier wiping aka lessens hard fouling in the temps we shoot in, in the west. It wasn’t a walk in the park to find the right combination of powder charge, wad or wads, grease wad, bullet dia. Paper, etc. funny thing was when I went from 104 gr. Of 1 F Swiss down just a grain to 103 (no compression) the group’s horizontal, and most importantly, the vertical shrank dramatically. Components as follows: BACO. 530 gr. .445 flat based elliptical, Seth Cole 55W, 103 gr. 1 F Swiss. Card wad, 3/16 beeswax, joyjoba oil mix cookie, card wad, then topped with 30 T. Walters wad.drop tubed and vibrated 35 inches at the same time. Custom sizer die to give tighter bullet fit annealed, checked and trimmed carefully to 2.875 or slightly more, ever so slightly flared case neck to start the patched dry wrapped bullet. 1-16 alloy. Had no dirt diggers low of target. I believe I had only 3 impacts in the dirt just low of target, or high. All misses were close due more to mirage and switching head and tail winds. Mostly left and right. Or a spotter’s call that changed just as I shot. 2 wet Birchwood Casey. Thin 2 and a half inch square dimpled cleaning patches followed by an arsenal patch to dry. Delrin rod with machined jag on one end and nylon brush on the other Switching when needed. Antrifreeze 50 50 for wiping fluid. Thanks.

So did Elwynn shoot a 24 or a 26? Seems like a 26 would have been the high score of the match…
