Quigley match calibers

Hi folks,
I was just curious what calibers over the years have been winners at the Quigley Match. I can find the names of winners, but nothing about caliber/bullets. Does anyone have a link to that info, or could otherwise share info? Thanks.

Dave Gullo has been a winner with rifle that is a rebuilt antique Ballard Number 7 A-1 Extra Long Range action, rebarreled and chambered for the .44-90 Remington Straight cartridge. His load featured bullets from a BACO mould (JIM447525C2) at .447-inch diameter, weighing 525 grains when cast from 20:1 alloy and powered by 74 grains of Swiss 1½ Fg. Other ingredients for his loads included a .030-inch poly wad, Federal’s GM210M primer and SPG Tropical bullet lube. The .44-caliber barrel, which was made by Krieger has a 1:17-inch twist. A Kelley Soule tang sight is on the rifle and at the front rides an MVA #118 sight with a .105-inch aperture.

45-70 is going to be your most popular cartridge. Bullets are going to range from 500-540gr. Barrel twist 1-18. Powder 1.5f-2f. Not to say that the 40's, 44's,50's aren't there and dont win, heck even the 38's can do well. I did pretty decent with a PP 38-55 this year and plan to use it again! I believe a 14yr old girl got 2nd?? last year with a 38-55. It has a lot to do with the shooter/spotter being able to read conditions, see them when they change and make the correct changes on the first shot. In my opinion, there isnt a caliber that will do better than another but, a better shooter will do better.

Alot of good shooting on every target can, and frequently goes astray on the 350 yd offhand bucket. Caliber choice there is not the real concern, but the rifles management in the frequent big "breeze" is.

Anything 38-55 or bigger can do it. As mentioned above, Danica Gamble got 2nd last year with one...if she'd got one more hit on the offhand she'd have won the whole thing. Whatever rifle you pick, make sure it's one you can practice with A LOT, especially offhand.

The only thing I will tell you is smaller calibers are not good in wet conditions. It is nearly impossible to see a miss if it's muddy.

Gussy hit that on the nose. Small diameter bullets disappear in the green too. A very noticeable difference stepping down from 45 to 40 on your ability to spot misses. As long as we're stirring the pot I'd like to see a 40 cal minimum at the Q there is no need for gamer guns it's supposed to be a " buffalo rifle" shoot. Flame on. Bobw

I think my little .38-50 did pretty good during the week. It hit 15 straight on the Buff and more again after a couple misses. But my spotter could not see the hits because of all the lead splatters on it.
The BIG .45-2.6 knocked me out of finishing the game twice now with eye damage
My plans were to stick around the neighborhood and I would have used it for the MT 1000.
It'd time for me to clean out my big Buffalo rifles. .......................

Bob got on me at the Q, telling me that they don't want any more people coming to it. The number of shooters there are right now is plenty! he said...everybody who's going to be shooting BPCR already knows about it

I don't know about 38's being gamer guns, but I would agree with outlawing smokeless, duplex, pyrodex, etc. If we go this far though, Bob will surely want greasers outlawed too. I guess I'm shooting a gamer bullet? If you outlawed all but black powder, I bet there's only about 250 competitors at the Q.

I've seen enough younger people handle and shoot 40's and larger to know they can do it. There are alot of adults who shoot 38's and that's who you want to protect, bpcr shooter? Maybe a separate class for the gamer crowd hell they have special classes for all the other groups why not a little more discrimination? Never to early to stir the pot Brian if that's what it takes to make people think..bobw
