Twist rate on a 40-65.

Hello,
I have recently acquired a pre Bryan ownership 1874 Shiloh Sharps, #8608 in 40-65.
Would anyone know what the twist rate of the bbl is for this caliber?

Probably 1/18". I ordered a .40-65 in ~1992-3, when the standard twist was 1/18" and 1/16" was optional. By the time the rifle was built in 1996, 1/16" was standard.

I had a Shiloh .40-70 SS barrel that was made in the very early '90's (I put it on a Rolling block action), and it was 1/18. It shot we'll out too 500m with the Saeco 740, although I never used it in twitchy conditions, which seem be the first to indicate marginal stabilization.

My .40-65 1874 Shiloh Sharps built in 2012 had a 16:1 twist barrel.

It shot well out to 1,000 yards with a 410 grain bullet.

Well I guess it is narrowed down to either 1and 16 or 1 and 20. The last time I tried to check the twist in a bbl with the cleaning rod method I got different readings.
Right now all I have are 400gr Snover's. I will see what I can get with them!

HI i shoot a 430 gr bullet and it works well for me out to 1100 yards which is the farthest i have tried it to so far. Good luck with yours they will shoot well have fun and keep shooting

John Bly shoots the 430gr BACo Creedmoor bullet in his Shiloh 40-65 with a 16" twist barrel and does passably well from time-to-time.

Not sure where you got the 1/20-I'm quite sure that 1/18 was the standard before 1/16 was adopted.

Why don't you call Shiloh and ask Kirk?

My mistake, I meant 1 and 18.

If that rifle is a 1:18, a bullet LENGTH of 1.25" is about right for full stability
If is is a 1:16, a 1.325" is proven stabile out to 1K

What is the bullet weight ? that is 1.325 ?

About 400, depending on nose shape. My Saeco 740 drops bullets 410 grains.
