starline case fill vs others

As I was loading some cases to fire form, the thought came thru my brain as to, if I could buy a case stretcher, stretch them, then just trim it back to the length I need? that way I could, for instance get the same amount (ish) of powder in a starline case as a winchester.. Has anyone ever done this? just to see if there is any more room vs factory size of same manufacture??

Or am I totally off my rocker in this thinking? It would be a big undertaking, that I get. Just the winter blues sitting at a bench i guess

It would probably make them a more uniform inside volume depending on the type of stretcher used.

I have not stretched any, but today I did weigh some starline 45-70 cases I am going to make 40-65 cases. I also weighed some Winchester. Starline was 190 grains average. Winchester was 158 to 170. Starline was consistent, Winchester was all over the place. I also had some Starline that was formed to 40-65. I had one case that was 192.7 and 187.8. I filled with isopropyl alcohol to measure the volume and the light case held 55.5 grains, the heavy held 55.2.

When I get the chance I'll stretch a few on my Kal-Max and check the volume vs un-stretched and report back. Just what you need is another project this winter!!

Thanks Todd!! yeah I need another project like I need another hole in my head! but it keeps me out of trouble ya know! Her rifle metal is out getting some color on it now, all I need to do is finish the wood when it gets back and toss some sights on it! Should be back to me around the end of Jan or so.

Im still working on the 45-90, 40-70, 32-40 and soon a 38-55 marlin. I have to start casting for next year too!!

Since the Kal-Max stretches the middle of the case there will be an increase in volume. How much depends on the amount of stretching.
