Finally I Gave Up On Paper Patch

Post by Kirk Stovall »

I have 3 original buffalo Sharps, 2 Walter Cooper marked and 1 A.D. McAusland and all in 40-90 bottleneck. I had a mould made and had a friend spend som time with the guns and paper patch bullets. They were minute of barn and I wanted better.

I have ignored them and taken them to shows in Cody, Wyoming and Greeley, Colorado, getting good recognition for their historical value. I was casting some 282 grain gas check bullets for my 40-50 Sharps bottleneck when I decided to size some at .410 and try them in my buffalo rifles.

It seemed like the rifles were not finicky about the load and bullets, ending my frustration with paper patch bullets.

This is at 70 yards and shooting both rifles at the silhouette and having this one great group…

Well as long as he's committing sacrilege on original Sharps rifles, he just as well put them out of their misery

And now that the cat Is out of the bag, who's gonna pay half the going price for an original that will only shoot grease groove bullets.
If he would drop one off on his way by sometime, I'm sure I could restore it back to full value.

It is a good group, but its only at 70 yards. Most any load combination should be able to do that?

“You must endeavor to persevere.”

If the Old Buffalo Hunters had given up on paper-patched bullets, we’d be up to our eyeballs in Buffalo. Try to find a parking space then!

Well I'll say it if no one else who knows won't. 1st of all I really doubt you could get greaser loaded in a 40 -90 sbn case sized to groove diameter to even chamber in a original chamber. So if they will some body micky'ed the chamber to make them work. After you do that all bets are off. They were the second most popular chambering behind the 45 2 7/8" during the northern plains buffalo hunt era with the pro buff hunters. They were accurate enough with paper patched bullets at extended ranges they were chosen by pros for their time one of the flatest trajectories availible. They didn't get to shoot many at 70 yds. Merry Christmas..bobw
