.45-110 Bitterroot Brass

Post by patchbox »

Have a possibility of getting 250 pieces of Shiloh headstamped .45-110 Bitterroot brass. Anybody know if this brass is any good?

The guy I might get it from paid over $3.00 each for 250 pieces. I offered him $2.00 each. I already have a crap ton of Norma basic and really don’t need it. I also have some of that Starline stretched .45-100 but don’t think I’d use that brass for my paper patched stuff. We’ll see.

It has less capacity than the Norma which works out well with my DD bullet. Eliminates the need for a big wadstack to keep the 105 gr load.

Can't speak of the 45-110 brass but the Shiloh marked 45-100 brass is pretty crappy, they usually crack half way down the case after one or two firings. Just a faint line but you can see it, no complete separations ....yet , but I've snapped several in half with my hands. I've annealed them several times prior to loading, doesn't seem to help.

Do you have an update on further use of this brass? Bobw

Unfortunately no. Been too cold.
One thing I did notice is the rim is occasionally thicker than others resulting in difficulty closing the breach block.

Yeah I hear you there on the cold. The brass defects Jeff m described sound like age caused brittleness what's your guess? You been working maintenance on your planes? Bob

That's a good question Bob. I'm not even an amateur metallurgist so I can't even guess.

I don't think I know enough about the actual composition of the "Brass" to know if simple annealing would never change it if it was.

Wonder what water quenching would do..

I know everyone says it won't change anything, but can't verify that given the unknown alloy.

I had 50 brass made like that and had problems with the heads done right.
Also had some winchester split like that when reformed. I believe it was from over working poor quality brass a bad batch used for reforming. Just my humble observation

Kirk will have to weight in on this.....especially if I'm full of crap. I seem to remember a post addressing this very style of brass and Kirk stated that he had an outfit that made head stamped "Shiloh" brass for his company. At first the quality was very good but as time went on the quality aspect went down the tubes. Then whoever was making the brass and Mr. Bryan parted company. My brass must of came from the latter stages of the relationship.
