Recent purchase ( no I did not "pick it up")- roller in 40-82 calibre. Need ammo, cases and dies

no ammo, you need to make it. What version of the 40-82 is it?? A chamber cast will tell you. Starline 45-90 brass will be needed. I believe RCBS makes dies. What twist is your barrel? This will determine bullet length.

I've been lucky using C&H4D as every time I needed an oddball die set they had them on the shelf. I've heard some people saying they had to wait awhile.
I called to order .50-140 dies and the gal on the phone told me it might be a couple days before she could ship them! Like she was apologetic they wouldn't ship that day! Same for my .35-40 Maynard die set that was in stock.
I have a lot of C&H4D die sets for oddball stuff just because they're reasonably priced, and great to buy from.

I called for 40-82 silhouette dies and they said it would I be a few months. That’s the first time I have had to wait for any dies from them.

As Ian has said, what version of the .40 - 82 do you have? There are about 4 main versions of it.

I have the second 40-82 that Dave Crossno chambered. Before there were dies available, I used my 40-65 sizing die on 40-82 Winchester brass that I got from BACO. I did need to trim the fire formed brass.

I bought a new die set out of Canada. I will have to anneal 45-70 brass to make it work I think

40-82 in a shiloh no for me but there is no reason if you did everything right and utilized 45-90 starlines that you couldn't get great results. I do think a really nice shape 86 win with orig style bullets and twist would be my interest. I ruled out the 40-70 ss a long time ago because of the lack of quality headstamped brass. The 40-70 2 1/4" sbn in its original chamber has allways intrigued me because of it being the std mid range cartridge. My saddle gun 40-70 2.1" bn has a higher powder cap but a dang short neck..with my 40 tgbs Kal tool molds adjusted to 370 grs it's very accurate. Another 74 in 40-90 2 5/8" sbn shows some stellar accuracy to utilizing the same ppb as the 40-70 2,1" especially so with its originally styled tight chamber.
The point is? Only that a guy just can't live long enough to ever satisfy his curiosity so many paths so little time. Not that much curiosity? Buy a 74 or 77 in 45-70 and proceed to wear it out. It is all good. I wore my right knee out and had it replaced so now i'm reloading my mobility. Bobw
