Having a problem locating 45-70 or 45-90 brass?

Post by TexasMac »

For those of you having a terrible time locating .45-70 or .45-90 brass since Starline is not taking orders, there is another solution. Starline is taking order on .45-100 (https://www.starlinebrass.com/45-100-brass-45-26/).

To shorten the brass one can use a case trimmer which can be quite tedious to trim .1" to .2” off 250 cases. A much faster method is to use one of the cheap cut-off saws from Harbor Freight below.

It’s funny how Starline keeps showing no orders for 45-70 then they open it for a few days and bam, all of a sudden 1000’s are on gun broker for sale. Sad.

I placed an order for 250 when they opened backorders in February. I just "pinged" them to find out where they are - they were responsive, but confirmed that they have not done a production run yet, so I'm still waiting.

I wrecked a few after my last shooting session - somehow bent the rim over while running the resizing die - maybe they were not centered - so I'm going to have to ration my sighting shots at the next event.

I know a gentleman who has been waiting over two years for Starline to fill his order of 45 2.6 brass. I wouldn’t hold my breath. Has anyone received a backorder of this brass in the last 2 or 2 1/2 years?

Yup, there's .45-70 on GunBroker but no .45-90 that I could find, no is it available on any other site I checked.
BTW, there is a site that lists it but SportsmansReloads is a scam site.

There was a thread last fall saying starline was on back order status for 2.1 so I called .Gave them my addy and cc# wallah had it 6 days later $137/250 total. You start telling folks to cut down to 2.6" the wyo posse prolly scalp your ass and then some. Starline is in the business to make and sell brass they can't help it if some gets scalped. If I would have bought a 1000 kept 250 and resold the rest mine would have been free. That's American, it ain't about making friends but money and not letting the bidenista irs getting any. Hell I am just glad they will sell it online straight to the customer. Now if I could twist their ear I'd get them to make some 50/70 I'd buy 10000 keep 500 and sell the rest to fund another shiloh for free. You gotta think like a shark if you swim with them or you will end up with a free ride thru their butthole. Yup I said that. Bobw

The 45-100 may be a solution if they would produce it….. I’ve had 45-100 on back order for over two years. No one’s fault, just the way it is now days.

I wonder if it really is the answer? What is the 2.6" brass thickness at the mouth? Same if it was trimmed to 2.1"? Besides the time to cut and convert are you gonna have to neck ream or turn? Just some things to contemplate. Bobw

Wayne as exclusive paper patch shooter it is zero problem to me but I imagine it is a royal pita to greaser shooters instantly. I know on 2.9 Norma and 3.25 Norma there is a differance cut to the same length so it makes me wonder.on the starline. Bobw

FWIW, I once did just that - trimming 45 basic brass to 45-70, rcbs I believe. Neck thickness didn't change a bit, I was a bit disillusioned as I had hoped for it to increase.
