45-90 bullet weight and velocity

I’m ready to order a Brooks mold for my 45-90. I was going to order a new Postell in a 500 grain but Steve mentioned going to a 5 groove (can’t recall the weight) for a higher BC and what he claimed was less recoil. Anyone have any actual data they can share on this? I’m interested in a head to head comparison on charge weight, velocity of the two versions to help me make my decision. Also, any compelling reason to choose a creedmoor in lieu of the new Postell?

Bill, the most important consideration is this, "To what purpose is this bullet going to be applied and at what distances?"

DD- the bullet will be used for silhouette shooting at those typical distances. As I don’t see myself shooting past that very often, less recoil fatigue takes precedence over a higher BC.

Frankly, I find three or four bullets in both the 45-70 & 45-90 more than adequate for silhouette.
In no particular order, Lyman 457132, Saeco #745, Jones Creedmoor, Brooks Creedmoor both Creedmoor's without the reduced bands.
I am hearing good things about the BACO Postel but have not shot it myself.
As for velocity, well, I frequently clock under 1200 fps.

Thanks DD. I got burned on my last Lyman mold (mold halves did not line up to the naked eye and a micrometer confirmed the bullets were grossly out-of-round) so they won't be getting my business again, at least, not for molds.

What weight are the Jones and Brooks Creedmoor's? 4 or 5 bands?

Did you slug the bore and give them the dimensions or did you just leave the dimensions up to them?

Leave the last cast bullet in the Lyman mould and send it back to them for replacement.

Depending on your alloy those probably will weigh in the 530-540 range.

Slugging the bore not necessary and using a good bullet lube whether 4 or 5 groove probably matters little.

The first Grand Slam Silhouette was won with the Saeco #745, which also won the Creedmoor Nationals at Raton. Translated into plain English, the Saeco #745 has done it all. What more do you want?

Look hard at the Brooks copy of the Paul Jones Creedmoor #45001 mould.

I will be doing a ladder test this weekend on a 90 that I just got. Has a Dan Theodore style chamber. I will use 545 grain BACO Creedmoor. I am interested to see what kind of FPS I will be getting with Swiss 1.5. Starting charge will be 64 grains and that’s with 0
Compression.

Good luck Ian. I start ladder loads with zero compression and the bullet about .030" into the rifling, which as you know imparts a very slight amount of compression, yet imparts a bit of centering the bullet to the bore. Or at least that is the theory.

All my rifles seem to like to be pushed about .030 into the lands.

81 grains of Swiss 1.5 pushed my 535 grain money bullet 1338. It has 3 reduced bands so it is seated real far out in the case. 70 grains of the same powder pushed my 545 grain Creedmoor 1252

I’ll have to check. That was from a ladder test I did but just guessing I would say 160 for both. I won’t be home until Sunday and I will make more loads then. I’ll be able to check it for sure and I will get back to you.
