My bud picked up this gun and it is very nicely done. It came with a 335~gr Hoch mold so that is what we're going to try. My question for the 38-55 shooters here what alloy? Think it is a 14 twist and will be using bp. Have new starline brass rcbs dies. Bobw

Bob I have a schuetzen CPA with a 38-55 1:14 twist Badger barrel. For whatever reason, they didn't chamber it with their very shallow leade reamer, but with a 6 degree one. As a result it takes a lot of effort to breech seat the Hoch 335gr tapered bullet and that one never shot that great for me. Instead I've been using the BACO 377325CT ( breech seated ) which is a tapered Creedmoor bullet. It has shot extremely well with a lot of Goex Fg I burned through.

That's for breech seated shooting though.

For fixed ammo, I have a Hoch 377310 bullet that shoots pretty decently in a C. Sharps 1885 with a 1:14 twist barrel.

Thanks guns my memory failed me on the bullet it is a hoch mould but..376 and 310 weight. The bottom 2 at 376 and the ones forward of that less smallest on top of course. What alloy do you use? Powder charge? The gun uses the 2.125 case and dropping a bullet in the chamber pushed out shows me a 2.645" oal max. This sound familiar? Bobw

I have a CPA 38-55 with a 15" twist Badger barrel. For the most part I have shot a Postel bullet that runs about 310 or so. The alloy is about 20-1 give or take some. I also have a Hoch 376-300 tapered bullet that I have shot a little. I just put it together over about 45 gr of Ctg Goex and it shot well enough to 10 out of 10 on pigs at 300 M. Now I did use the whole pig but I figure that is a pretty good start to things.

Bob, I also have the 376310. I don't like it as much as the 377310 bullet. The 376 one is tapered but the 377 isn't. I've never got better than 2 moa with the 376310, but when I shot it, I would have used 20:1 and Swiss 1.5.

I shoot the lyman 379674 and my DDPP both at 16+1. Ive also ran them with Lyman #2 with good success.

While I shoot a 38-55 am sure my 12" twist load of 52gr of 2F Swiss and BACo 365gr Creedmoor bullet hold little interest for your slower twists.

As a bit more info, on the Garmin chrony, this load charts at 1310fps with an SD of 11.

Lyman 335gr from Montana Bullet works, makes them made from Lyman #2, IIRC

If I didn't list it, it's not in the case.

The Ram & Pig board were both shot at their respective firing lines, 547 yds & 328? yds, both by a 15 yr old girl, prone, (Alissah).
The Ram board is shot in this order, Red pin, white pin, blue pin, yellow, then green. winded at the start & finish, left the swinger, never adjusted the sight

The pig board likes the 42 & 44gr loads, gets a belly ache with 43grs. 43grs was Followed up at other distances & a couple paper targets, belly ache remained

Been using it for 5,6,7 yrs?
Works blow tubed, or with the Pat Taylor wiping method, which is what is used on a 38-55, 40-65, 45-70, 45-100, long range guns & 2 38-55 lever guns. It was also used on a couple of 45-90's & 45 100's by a couple of guys in Arizona, (they aged/healthed out of the game).

I've got 90+ lbs of it, I'm good forever, the girls are good forever, grandson also.
Wanna try some? It's expensive as f.

I'm thinking about making some more

On the topic of .38-55 - I picked up C Sharps Hepburn in .38-55. It’s the short chamber, 2.089”. Should I get the long cases and trim? Or just buy the short cases?

I've never used anything in any style rifle other than the standard Winchester case.

When you say standard are you referring to a case length of 2.080” or 2.125”? Starline sells both case lengths - I really don’t know which case length to try.

The old standard it seems was a case length of 2.125. The new chambering offered in new rifles seems to be the 2.080”. If I order the 2.125” length I can always trim it. The brass will probably get a bit shorter on the first firing anyway. Figure I can trim it to a size that just fits.

And I read the article on Starline website. So to me it seems like a good choice to go with the longer case and trim as necessary.
