Is a 16 to 1 alloy to hard for a grease groove bullet?
Thanks Richard

That was the alloy the Army used for it's 1881 bullet, and it's quite popular currently for both grease groove and paper patch.

I have in the last year converted to 16-1 for all competition. It's as good as it gets for me !

Well, I tried searching for this, but no luck with the forum search box, as it kept telling me the terms were too common.. Sigh..

Can someone expound on the benefits of 16-1 alloy vs. 20-1 alloy?

I've not cast anything yet as some components are still on order from BACO, but I've got a starter batch of 20-1 alloy to use for initial casting. This will be for my 45-70 Shiloh Sharps using a Paul Jones 45001 mold.

Thanks in advance.

Many matches have been won using 20:1 alloy.
Many matches have been won using 16:1 alloy.
Matches have even been won using 12:1 alloy.

Alright,

So basically, in my world (I will probably never shoot at a match), it doesn't matter,

Leave it to Steve to hit the nail on the head. Use what works best for you. I use 16:1 for my money bullets and 20:1 for my Creedmoor bullets.

For plinking , any cheap alloy works. For serious stuff a better alloy makes for perhaps a more consistant bullet. But remember it all shoots if you figure out how to use it.
Pointer bullets pushed hard need hard alloy round nose bullets with charges that conform to the alloys strength are more forgiving.
