Midrange trajectory

Post by mike herth »

What is the midrange trajectory at 1000 yards of a 45 caliber bullet, say a 530 grain Postell, with a 1300 fps muzzle velocity? I've heard everything from 30 feet to over 100. Just curious.

With a 100 yard zero and a level plane, “approximately” 1,044” or 87’ (a software calculation and not a personal observation).

I don't know how Steve got his figure and don't know the specifics of his load. I used the bc of my ppb at 509 grs at 1300 fps and plug it in Ballistic computer version 1 with a 1000 yd zero at mid range of 550 yds my bullet is 462.3 inches above my line of sight at 550 yds that's 462.3÷12= 38.5 feet. That roughly corresponds with my actual points on the staff of my XLR buffalo soule sight set at 1000 yds. The qualifier here of course is that's my Montana roughrider, mva rear, Lee Shaver frt with my ppb reloads. I have no idea of the bc, weight and velocity of someone else's beer can shaped greasers. I ran it for 1300 fps and 0.450 bc and got 450" above line of sight at 500 yds, very close to bobw's results.

Clarence, did my read out on 50 yd intervals 500 was 452, 550 462, 600 at 452" used a .42 bc value. Bobw

Interesting.
How high would the trajectory be at its highest, and at what range?

I don't know if my range will decrease smaller than 50 yd units Keith but looking at it. Showed 550 yds at it's highest for 1000 yd sight in.. bobw

Bob,

My app was set in 100 yd increments. The 600 yd setting was ~450" high, so I'd concur with you that the max height would probably b e at 550 yd.

Thanks Bob and Clarence.
I thought it might be coming down in a steeper parabola at the end and the highest would be around 6 or 700 but it not far off the mid range after all.
