Phillip B. Sharpe

Post by Ray Newman »

Last night I was looking through my Wolfe Publications 1988 reprint of Phillip B. Sharpe’s 1937 “Complete Guide to Handloading”.

Amazing how far reloading has come. I’ve often thought that he had some “pull” as a result of his gun writer status to have access to the firearms & powder manufacturing facilities that he visited & talked about.

However, I can’t find any biographical data on him. I’ve heard that he was related to the “Brown & Sharpe” machine tool manufacturing company. IIRC, he was a developer of “Browne & Sharpe” wildcat cartridges of what the late 1940s-early 1950s?

Anyone have any info or links to info ‘bout him?

I have the 3rd edition, 2nd revision of Complete Guide, bought off ebay.
Fascinating, but I have not seen any biographical information about Phil Sharpe. All I know about him is in this book and a few old articles in early Handloader's Digests.

I have never heard of a Browne & Sharpe wildcat. The only cartridge I know of that he put his name on was the 7x16 Sharpe & Hart. Later factory made by Norma for ammunition and Schultz & Larsen for rifles.
