Please help with my 40-70 SBN

Hi folks, I am trying to order supplys to start loading my Remington RB in 40-70 SBN. It has a 1-22" twist and measures .409 in the groves. I cannot find a sutible bullet for it to hunt with. Everything I find has a pint on it. Any suggestions?? Also, what is the weight limitation for a .40 bullet with a 1-22" twist? Thanks, George

LB - It's not so much the weight you should be concerned with, but rather the length of the bullet. That 1-22" twist pretty much means you won't be able to stabilize a bullet longer than 1.12". RCBS makes a 40 caliber 300 grain bullet (Item #: RCB82070) with a small meplat that if cast of 40:1 should meet your needs for a hunting bullet. Buffalo Arms (

Rapine makes a pretty decent 40 caliber mould...No. 408336...which casts at about 0.411" out of 1:30 mix. I run mine through a 0.410" sizer die which gives me a 0.409" slug. Weighs 336-340 grains. Don't ask why it works this way, but that is what I get. Works great in my Shiloh 1 in 16" twist and may just work in your 1 in 22" twist.
I can send you some slugs to try before you buy a mould if you want. Send mailing address via PM if you want some. Mould can be purchased from Rapine or Buffalo Arms.
This slug works great on whitetail size critters. Don't know if I would chance it on anything larger.
