Comparison between the .45-70 and 40-70 Straight
I've got a Sporter #1 in 45-70 that I use for target work. Now, I'm looking for something just for hunting that is a little different but is still plenty of gun for elk. The 45-70 is close to as much recoil I care to deal with with a gun I use a lot at the bench. In a gun of the same weight, say around 12 pounds, how would the recoil compare between the .45-70 and the 40-70 Sharps Straight? Thanks, in advance, for your comments.

Never shot a 40/70 so I stick with the 45/70. Hunting guns you carry more than shoot so I've gone with a 28"er that shaves off more than 2 lbs.... once you sight in you don't need that bench for a hunting rifle, you need practice but why punish yourself at a bench? 45/70 is no .458.
You could get a hack saw or have an excuse to buy a new gun.... but then who needs an excuse to buy another gun?

Here's what I think a hunting Shiloh in 40-70ss should look like.

No words of mine can hope to convey to you the ringing joy and hope embodied in that spontaneous yell: “The Americans are coming; at last they are coming!”
I hadn’t the heart to disillusion them.
