Have you ever had a chance to read Ned Roberts book "The Muzzleloading Caplock Rifle??

What a treasure trove of how the game was once played!

Fine old rifles capable of some amazing accuracy.

When you read Robert's book, you have to keep in mind that there were
a lot more shooters actively getting out than there are today. There were
arround 24 different brands of Black Powder (I may have lost an accurate
count) availiable in 1895. I remember that reading the posted match scores being shot were not too far off those achieved at the same distances today. Given that original rifles usually had barrel dimensions
that varied by so much that you wonder how it could have come from the same manufacturer, you can only admire the old gents who worked out
the details with what they had to work with. Not too many shooters had
Harry Pope barrels. Personnally, I would bet that the riflemen from those
days would envy the quality we have today; but shake their heads trying
to figure out why so few men even own a gun and shoot at all.

TR, golf and a good time

TR, had a shooting range at the White House, ( boy there's an image for ya. Imagine the Secret Service on THAT one!) and I believe he also had a shooting range at his home which I think was in NY.

I know he used 'Sliencer" in NY and I may have have at the White House too.

Since I live in a community with a golf course - about 2 minutes walk - I"ve often had the fantasy of having a little fun with the golfers. Imagine they tee off and off goes the ball. I'm somewhere's comfortable watching through my scope and the ball comes to rest on the green not far from the hole. The golfer strides up to the ball, takes his stance and swings...but all of sudden "pop" and the ball is just not there.

Wouldn't that be fun? Those guys are wrapped just Waaaay too tight.

Now if I was a cardiologist I'd be haveing fun and creating patients at almost the same instant.

Now I don't know what a .30 cal would do to a golf ball as mostly I shoot smaller targets but I'm sure it would be fun to watch.

One would have to use the other power as the smoke would leave too much of a trail.
