Re: disagrement
I think after all this time, I finally came up with the answer.
They didn't have appliances to practice shooting and never knew how accurate those paperpatched black powder loads could be.
Aren't modern marvels like refrigerators that only last 5-10 years wonderful ???
Nailed it.
There's just something magical about the wump of that big bullet punching thru a refrigerator door, fading into the tinny wang of the vibrating cooling coils in the back as the slug exits.

When you gift wrap your bullets before sending them, it’s just classier.

In an apple-to-apple comparison with the best loads & in the hands of a highly experienced shooter, the Browning 1885 High Wall BPCR will outshoot the Shiloh Sharps 1874 BPCR due to Browning’s centrally located hammer, faster lock time & Badger barrel.

I paper patch with dollar bills...Real linen and cheaper to use when you figure in tax and outrageous shipping cost. Green side out and shoot like a high roller.

My Hepburn has all those same qualities, looks better at the same time and shoots only paper patch bullets!
I don't see anything to disagree with there either!
That being said, neither the Browning 1885 High Wall nor my Hepburn are the Legendary Sharps rifle! There is just something in the 1874 Sharps that calls to me and many other shooters as well.
You would think we could find disagreement somewhere!

Re: disagrement
Cheap sticky masking tape works better than expensive PP paper or a dollar bill. It's easy & fast to apply & stays on the bullet all the way to the target.

I have heard that extended paper wrapping of bullets causes ones eyes to eventually and permanently focus on the end of their nose which of course prevents them from seeing beyond the end of their own noses.

Though it must be said the rattle of a washing machine basket bouncing about inside the casing has its own charm.

Re: disagrement
I've heard that the inability to be able to shoot paper patch bullets well causes greasers to lash out at those shooter that are able to achieve match accuracy with paper patch bullets. I'm not sure why they would feel the need to do that?
I don't know if that's true, but it's what I've heard! I suspect that it is just the fear of failure that prevents some from trying.
