Reloading Books.

Post by Paul1874Sporter1 »

I'm new to Sharps. I ordered my Sharps 1874 Sporter 1 this last May, and get this I did it in person. What I need to know is, are there any Reloading Books that are better to use for Reloading for my Sharps. I'll get the Rifle some time next year, it's a 45-70.

The SPG book and Ventorino on Shooting Buffalo rifles as well as The Black powder journal are must have. Roger

Thanks Roger for your input. I'll be loading smokeless. Some time in the next few months I’ll be buying my dies for my reloading. I’ve already been looking at the Hornady and Nosler Reloading Books for my Powder and the grain of bullets. I’m looking for reloading books, for reloading smokeless cartridges. I need all the information that I can get, thanks Paul.

Paul,
If you intend to load smokeless consider the new Lyman manual, it covers a lot of the older BP cartridges with smokeless loads.

I forgot to say that I have also looked at the Lyman Manual. I was amazed on how much it had on the older Rifles and Calibers. Thanks for you input and help, Paul.

Also check out Lymans "Black Powder Handbook&Loading Manual" which is widely available for around $18.00.

Listed are black powder loads for many of the 40 and 45 caliber cartridges. This book also has 20 chapters of informative text. Every black powder shooter needs to have this book in his library.

Log on below & bookmark, or print the on-line reloading manual.

It was written & compiled by a successful BPCR shooter.

Even though it is a BP reloading manual, it will provide you w/ information that may come in handy later on.

Below are links to some recent threads started by a another Sharps neophyte that may be of some interest to you:

Ray,

Thanks Ray for all of the links. You obviously have put a lot of time into Reloading. I keep seeing BPCR; I take it that this stands for Black Powder Cartridge Reloading…how close am I? It will take time to check out each link and read what it has. I’m sure that by the time my Rifle comes I’ll be better prepared for it. I did pick up Lyman’s 48th Edition Reloading Handbook just yesterday. They have a lot of very good articles in the front of the book. I’m glad that I posted my question here. Thanks once again for your response to my question, Paul

Thanks to everyone,

I would like to say thank you to everyone that has responded. Buying my Sharps was one of both expense and pleasure. It has been very exciting to go in person an pick exactly what I wanted. To meet the people that, are going to make my Rifle and many others. To hold the many different Rifles that they had there on display was an experience that is difficult to put into words. To make it even better my Dad an ardent Hunter himself, came with me. I could see on his face the enjoyment to watch his son with the owner of the Company go through the many different Rifles that they had. To handle them and work with its owner on choosing the best one that fits both me and my needs.

And now that they are in the process of putting my Sharps together, well now we are preparing for the day that I can pick it up and bring it home. When that day comes, I want to be as prepared and educated on the Sharps as I can. From talking to my Dad, the deer we shoot here in the San Francisco Bay Area are not too small to shoot with it. Yet, I’m excited about shooting competition. That is not a sure thing. I’ll have to go to a few of them and see for myself if this is what I want to do. Nevertheless, I’m not through with asking questions. And those of you that can help me out, well I just would like to say thank you now just incase I may forget in my excitement to say so at a later date. I’ve never thought that I would own my own Sharps Rifle. Better yet, it’s not a gift… I like the idea that I’ve gone and bought it myself. I think what I picked is me. So thank you to everyone, and this is not my way of saying I’m leaving… just t say thank you for now and later, Paul.
