OT question for Mike V.

Post by pcctex »

Didn't know how to contact you....this seemed like the surest way.

My question is the wisdom or folly in using gas checked bullets in an original 1886 Winchester. You used RCBS 300 grain gas check bullets in your load data in the 45-90 Winchester in your lever gun book. I have a model 1886 45-90 that shoots the 300 grain gas check bullet very well. The gas check measures .457 diameter.

As it relates to barrel wear; is this bullet ok as a steady diet, or should I go to a flat base non-gas checked bullet?

Thanks for your help.

Your gas check bullets won't put any noticable wear on your 1886. At least that is my opinion. The wear comes from the friction generated by jacketed bullets, but the gas check is so small as to hardly be a factor. Good luck.
